# Connect an AI app to KickBot

> Connect ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Cursor or another MCP app to KickBot, so it can read and change your channel's KickBot settings after you approve it.

Source: https://kickbot.com/docs/api/start/connect-ai-apps

You connect an AI app to KickBot with the KickBot MCP server. Add the server URL as a custom connector (or MCP server) in the app, then approve the app on the KickBot page that opens. The app can then manage your commands, timed messages, TTS, alerts, widgets and more for you, for example "Add a !discord command with my server link."

The KickBot MCP server URL is:

```text
https://kickbot.com/api/v1/mcp
```

## What happens when you connect

When an app connects for the first time, it opens a KickBot page in your browser:

1. Sign in to KickBot.
2. Choose the **Channel**.
3. Choose the access level:
   - **Read and change settings.** The app can make changes, the same as you can in the dashboard. Changes apply to your live channel.
   - **Read only.** The app can see your settings and data, but cannot change anything.
4. Click **Approve**.

The app gets only the permissions you have on that channel. If you are a team member and not the owner, the owner or an admin must turn on **API & MCP access** for you in **Manage Team**. Channels where you do not have it are not in the list.

## Use the setup prompt

The fastest way for apps that can follow instructions (for example coding agents):

1. Open **API & MCP** in the dashboard.
2. Click **Copy setup prompt**.
3. Send the prompt to your AI app.

The prompt tells the app to read the [agent guide](https://kickbot.com/api/v1/mcp.md), add the MCP server, and sign in with your KickBot account. You approve the access in KickBot as described above.

## ChatGPT

1. In ChatGPT, open **Settings > Apps & Connectors**. Turn on developer mode in **Advanced settings** if your plan requires it.
2. Click **Create** (or **Add custom connector**).
3. Enter a name, for example "KickBot", and paste the MCP server URL.
4. Select **OAuth** for authentication and click **Create**.
5. Approve the connection on the KickBot page that opens.

## Claude

1. In Claude, open **Settings > Connectors**.
2. Click **Add custom connector**.
3. Enter "KickBot" and paste the MCP server URL. Leave the OAuth fields empty.
4. Click **Connect** and approve the connection on the KickBot page.

## Grok

1. Open the connectors (or custom MCP) settings in Grok.
2. Add a new connector with the MCP server URL.
3. Approve the connection on the KickBot page that opens.

For the xAI API and Grok Build, use an [API key](https://kickbot.com/docs/api/start/api-keys) instead, and send it in the `authorization` field of the remote MCP tool.

## Cursor, VS Code and other MCP apps

Most MCP apps sign in with OAuth on their own when you add the server URL. For example, in Cursor add this to your MCP settings:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "kickbot": { "url": "https://kickbot.com/api/v1/mcp" }
  }
}
```

If an app does not support OAuth, use an [API key](https://kickbot.com/docs/api/start/api-keys) and send it as a header:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "kickbot": {
      "url": "https://kickbot.com/api/v1/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${KICKBOT_API_KEY}" }
    }
  }
}
```

## Load fewer tools

The server has many tools. Some apps work better with fewer. Add `?areas=` with the areas you need, separated by commas:

```text
https://kickbot.com/api/v1/mcp?areas=commands,timers,tts
```

Area names: `commands`, `timers`, `clip_command`, `moderation`, `ai_character`, `imagine`, `chat_alerts`, `tts`, `tipping`, `overlays`, `widgets`, `clips`, `vods`. The `account` area (with `get_account_overview`) is always included. The [API reference](https://kickbot.com/docs/api) lists what each area covers.

## Disconnect an app

1. Open **API & MCP** in the dashboard.
2. Under **Connected apps**, click the app, then click **Disconnect**.
3. Click **Disconnect app** in the popup.

The app loses access to your channel at once. To use it again, connect it again. Owners and admins can disconnect any app on the channel.

## FAQ

**Can ChatGPT post messages in my Kick chat?**

No. No app can send a chat message directly. An app can set up commands, timed messages and chat alerts, and KickBot posts those the normal way.

**Why does the app not show some KickBot tools?**

The app sees only the tools for features you have permission to use on that channel. A read-only connection sees only read tools. If you added `?areas=` to the URL, the app sees only those areas.

**How long does a connection last?**

Until you disconnect it, or until the app is not used for 60 days. Removing a team member also ends their connections.
