A Kick chat overlay shows your live chat messages on your stream. KickBot's **Basic Chat Widget** is a transparent chat widget for OBS: you install it from the widget library, change the font and colors, and add its URL as a browser source. It shows Kick badges, Kick and 7TV emotes, and removes messages that your moderators delete.

You need a KickBot account with your Kick channel connected. KickBot does not need to be a moderator for the chat overlay to work.

## Pick a chat style

KickBot has three official chat widgets. All three are 800 × 600 pixels. The settings below are for the Basic Chat Widget. The other two also let you change their colors and display options.

- **Basic Chat Widget**: no background. Only the names, badges and messages show, so the chat sits on top of your game. This is the classic transparent Kick chat overlay.
- **Basic chat (Block background)**: each message has its own dark block behind it.
- **Basic chat (Box background)**: all messages sit in one dark box.

The library also has chat widgets made by other streamers, for example animated, sideways and typewriter styles. Search **chat** in the [widget library](https://kickbot.com/docs/widgets/widget-library) to see them all.

## Add Kick chat to OBS

1. Open the [widget library](https://kickbot.com/dashboard/widget-library) and click **Basic Chat Widget** (or another chat style).
2. Click **Install widget**.
3. Open [Saved widgets](https://kickbot.com/dashboard/saved-widgets) and click **Copy URL** on the chat widget.
4. In OBS, add a **Browser** source to your scene and paste the URL into the **URL** field.
5. Set **Width** to 800 and **Height** to 600, then click **OK**.

Your recent chat shows at once, and new messages come in live. To change the size on screen, drag the corners of the source in OBS. To make the text bigger or smaller, change **Font size** in KickBot instead, so the text stays sharp.

## Settings

Click the chat widget in Saved widgets to open its settings. The preview at the top shows sample chat with your changes. Click **Save** when you are done. The overlay in OBS reloads by itself.

| Setting | What it does | Default |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Widget name | The name in your Saved widgets list. It does not show on stream. | Basic Chat Widget |
| Font size | Size of the message text, in pixels. | 26 |
| Show bots | When off, hides messages from KickBot and other known chat bots. | On |
| Remove old messages | When on, each message disappears after the time below. | On |
| Remove messages after | Seconds before a message disappears. | 60 |
| Text color | Color of the message text. Names keep each chatter's Kick name color. | White (#ffffff) |
| Show badges | Shows Kick badges next to names: broadcaster, moderator, VIP, OG, founder, sub gifter and your channel's own sub badges. | On |
| Show emotes | Shows Kick emotes and your 7TV emotes as images. When off, emotes are left out of messages. | On |
| Text shadow | Adds a soft shadow and outline so text is easy to read on bright scenes. | On |
| Highlight @ messages | Highlights messages that tag your channel name. | On |

When a moderator deletes a message on Kick, it also goes away from the overlay.

Under **Test events**, click **Message** to add a sample chat message to the preview, or **Message deleted** to remove one. Test events only go to the preview, not to OBS.

> **Caution:** Keep the chat widget URL private. Anyone with it can show your chat overlay on their own screen.

## Make a transparent chat overlay

The **Basic Chat Widget** has no background, so it is transparent in OBS by default. Only the names, badges, emotes and text show. If your game is bright and the text is hard to read, leave **Text shadow** on, or install **Basic chat (Block background)** for a dark block behind each message.

## Troubleshooting

**No messages show in OBS.** Check that you pasted the full URL from Saved widgets. Type a message in your Kick chat and wait a few seconds. If it still shows nothing, right-click the source in OBS and choose **Refresh cache of current page**.

**The text is blurry.** You made the source bigger in OBS. Set the source back to 800 × 600 and raise **Font size** in KickBot.

**Bot messages still show.** Turn off **Show bots** and click **Save**. The filter hides KickBot and a list of common Kick bots. A bot account with another name still shows.

**Emotes do not show.** Turn on **Show emotes** and click **Save**. For 7TV emotes, your Kick channel must be linked on 7TV.
